A Word to the Dreamers

“Yes, but what’s your real job going to be?

“Can you really make any money doing that?”

“Oh, you’re one of those artsy people.”

I’ve heard all of those phrases quite a few times. I don’t know, maybe you have to.

I promise I’m not bashing artsy people, I fully admit to being one of them – but often the way that phrase comes across to me is “oh, you’re one of those get-a-degree-in-something-useless-like-Greek-Literature-from-the-7th century people who will never actually have a job.” Livin’ on dreams and spaghetti-o’s, you know what I’m talking about (with all due respect to Martina McBride, of course. If you didn’t get that reference, you’ve just got to listen to more country music).

Listen, the point is, when I was about 14 I was reading a Christian girl’s magazine and came across a question from a reader who wanted to know where she could find more quality YA fiction that wasn’t all romance.

That afternoon I heard a very clear voice in my head saying “that’s your job.” So the long and the short of it is, I’m going to be a writer. I don’t know what that looks like, yet.  It’s scary. But at the same time…it’s really exciting.

I know a lot of you reading this are like me, or know someone who is. You’ve got a dream in your heart that seems impossible. Something that might make family and friends look at you in concern. It doesn’t seem safe.

But you know what?

Our God isn’t safe.

But He is good. (Narnia reference…)

That one I’m certain of. Look, I know there are days when you look at yourself in the mirror and feel like an idiot for chasing something that seems so out of reach. But the mirror doesn’t define you. Neither do any of the people who think you can’t do it – because those people will always be there.

I’ve got news for you.

God’s dreams for you are a heck of a lot bigger than yours. They look even more impossible. Even further out of reach.

Me: That’s crazy, I mean, come on. No one can do that.

God: Watch me.

Point is, I don’t care what people say to you.

I don’t care what hell whispers in your ear.

I DON’T CARE what YOU think is impossible.

God doesn’t either. He’s bigger than that.

Are you ready to let Him show you?
